Tree Cover Loss, 2000-2020

Loss of tree cover has numerous devastating effects on our planet, including changes to climate patterns and ecosystems. Global Forest Watch has country-level data on a number of facets of deforestation and its conseqences. Here I demonstrate two methods of displaying tree cover loss data in the last 20 years.

A few countries are missing data and show up as grey.

Individual year data may be flawed; many countries showed their largest losses in 2001, the first available year for these data. Additionally, data collection methods changed after 2015. Please interpret specific values with caution, of primary interest here was displaying a) the differences in highlighted countries when evaluating by area or percent loss and b) the relative losses across countries during the same time frame.
